Installation Instructions

VMware products support only the x86 Platform Edition. You cannot install the SPARC Platform Edition in a VMware virtual machine.
To install Oracle Solaris 11 Operating System in a virtual machine you can use the LiveCD or text installer for x86. The following installation instructions are for standard distribution DVD set.

Note: Oracle Solaris 11 Operating System does not support floppy disks. If you attempt to add a physical floppy disk or a floppy image on a local disk or datastore to an Oracle Solaris 11 guest operating system, the floppy drive is not mounted.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, verify that the following tasks are complete:

  • Read General Installation Instructions for All VMware Products.
  • Before upgrading a virtual machine's guest operating system to the latest Oracle Solaris 11 release, increase the virtual machine's RAM. See your VMware product documentation for instructions.   • LSI SAS virtual SCSI adapter is supported with ESX 5.5 or later. If you are using an older version of ESX, due to a third-party issue, you cannot install Oracle Solaris 11 when the LSI SAS virtual SCSI adapter is used with any other VMware virtual machine. VMware recommends that you use the LSI Logic virtual SCSI adapter with this guest operating system.

Installation Steps

  1. Insert the Oracle Solaris 11 Operating System for x86 LiveCD or the text installer DVD in the DVD or CD-ROM drive.
  2. Power on the virtual machine.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
  4. Install VMware Tools.

On ESX, VMware Tools is supported on ESX 3.x and later.
