Installation Instructions

The easiest method of installing Fedora 18 Desktop Edition in a virtual machine is to use the standard Fedora 18 distribution DVD.
Note: Easy Install of Fedora 18 Desktop Edition is not supported on VMware Workstation 9.0.x.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, verify that the following task is complete:

Installation Steps for Easy Install

  1. Power on the virtual machine to start installing the guest operating system.
  2. From the menu, click Create a New Virtual Machine and select Typical.
  3. On the Guest Operating System Installation page, select to install using from an installer disk or an ISO image and click Next.
  4. On the Easy Install Information page, type your username and password.
  5. Follow the prompts in the wizard to initate the installation process.
    The virtual machine powers on to initiate and complete installation.

Installation Steps for Manual Install

  1. Power on the virtual machine to start installing the guest operating system.
  2. From the menu, click Create a New Virtual Machine and select Typical.
  3. On the Guest Operating System Installation page, select I will install the operating system later.
  4. On the Select a Guest Operating System page, select Linux as the operating system.
  5. From drop-down menu, select either the Fedora or Fedora 64-bit operating system type.
  6. On the Ready to Create Virtual Machine page, click Customize Hardware.
  7. Select Hardware > New CD/DVD (IDE).
  8. Set the Device status to Connect at power on and select the installation method.
    • Insert the Fedora Desktop Edition 18 DVD disc in the CD-ROM, set the Connection to Use physical drive, and click Close.
    • Set the Connection to Use ISO image file, click Browse to navigate to the Fedora 18 Desktop Edition ISO image, and close the dialog box.
  9. Power on the virtual machine to start installing Fedora 18 Desktop Edition.
  10. Follow the prompts in the wizard to complete the installation.
  11. Restart the virtual machine after the installation completes.
  12. From the Fedora 18 Desktop Edition installer disk or ISO image, install kernel-devel, kernel-headers, and GCC.
  13. Restart the virtual machine.
  14. Install VMware Tools.

VMware Tools in a Fedora 18 Desktop Edition Guest

You can install VMware Tools in the Fedora 18 guest using the tar installer.

  1. Open a terminal window.
  2. Log in as a root user.
  3. Click Install/Upgrade VMware Tools to mount the VMware Tools virtual disc on the guest operating system.
  4. Run the VMware Tools installer.
    vmware-install.pl
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
