Installation Instructions

The easiest method of installing Fedora 17 Desktop Edition in a virtual machine is to use the standard Fedora 17 distribution DVD.
Note: Easy Install of Fedora 17 Desktop Edition is not supported on VMware Workstation 8.x.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, verify that the following task is complete:

Installation Steps

  1. Insert the Fedora 17 Desktop Edition installation media in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. From the menu, click Create a New Virtual Machine.
  3. On the Guest Operating System Installation page, select I will install the operating system later.
  4. On the Ready to Create Virtual Machine page, click Customize Hardware.
  5. Select Hardware > New CD/DVD (IDE) and set Device status to Connect at power on.
  6. Set connection to Use physical drive .
  7. Power on the virtual machine to start installing Fedora 17 Desktop Edition.
  8. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
    Press Alt + N if the Next button is not displayed.
  9. Install VMware Tools.

VMware Tools in a Fedora 17 Desktop Edition Guest

You can install VMware Tools in the Fedora 17 guest using the tar installer.

  1. Open a terminal window.
  2. Log in as a root user.
  3. Click Install/Upgrade VMware Tools to mount the VMware Tools virtual disc on the guest operating system.
  4. Run the VMware Tools installer.
    vmware-install.pl
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
